Polio or infantile paralysis is a crippling and potentially infectious disease which can spread from person to person. In 1988 there were approximately 350000 cases of polio and in 2016 37. With the introduction of the salk vaccine in 1955, we started to see a drop in cases. Although few realize this Rotary was the first organization to begin working to eradicate polio. Since that time Rotary has worked with other organizations and in particular The Gates Foundation to bring an end to polio around the globe.
